How much sugar is hiding in your trolley?

by | Aug 4, 2020 | Dental Health Week 2020

Have you checked your sugar intake recently?

Your Warrnambool dentist is here to provide useful information to help you control your sugary and acidic food and beverage consumption.

Read on to learn more about Dental Health Week 2020.

Dental Health Week aims to educate Australians about the importance of maintaining good oral health by promoting four key messages:

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride-containing toothpaste for two minutes each time.

Flossing between your teeth daily using floss or interdental brushes.

Keeping a healthy, balanced diet and limiting your sugary and acidic food intake.

Visiting your Warrnambool dentist regularly for check-ups and treatments.

The main goal of this year’s campaign is spread information on the dangers sugar does to one’s oral health, aiming to help patients ‘get sugar savvy’.

This includes recommended daily sugar consumption levels, advice on checking food labels, and spells out the effect sugar has on our teeth.

This information is supported by three main sugar messages:

  1. Avoid foods and drinks with added sugars.
  2. Opt for foods with less than 10g of sugar per 100g.
  3. Look out for hidden sugars when buying foods and drinks.

Making healthy choices at the supermarket means making similar smart food and drink choices at home.

We may assume that everyone has good oral health; the reality is, the oral health of many Australians is not near our expectations.

  • Under 50% of Australian adults have had a dental check-up in the last 12 months.
  • 53% of Australians brush their teeth only once a day.
  • Almost 40% of Australians DO NOT floss or clean between their teeth.
  • 73% of young people are consuming too much sugar.
  • 47% of adults are consuming too much sugar.
