When there is not enough bone in the upper jaw to receive an implant, a bone graft may be necessary.
In order to make room for a bone graft in the upper jaw, sinus tissue in the area may need to be lifted and moved away from the graft site.
When this is necessary, the patient will receive a sinus lift during their bone graft procedure.
Why Do I Need a Sinus Lift?
The upper jawbone is surrounded by sinus membranes.
A patient may require a sinus lift if:
- There’s no enough bone to support upper jawbone dental implant as a result of bone loss, requiring a bone graft
- There’s sufficient upper jawbone for a dental implant as a result of anatomy, requiring a bone graft
- Sinuses are too close to the bone graft site
- Sinuses are too close to the dental implant site
How Does a Sinus Lift Work?
During a sinus lift, the surgeon will make an incision in your gum tissue near the bone graft site.
If there is sinus tissue in the area, there will be a membrane lining that separates it from the jawbone.
The membrane is then carefully lifted or moved away from the graft site.
When it is safely out of the way, bone tissue will be added to the jawbone through a bone graft procedure.
Once the bone graft is in place, the gum tissue is stitched closed, and the procedure is complete.
You will be required to wait 4 to 9 months after a bone graft before receiving your dental implants. This will allow the bone graft to heal and integrate with the jawbone.
Depending on the size of the bone graft, you may be able to receive your dental implants during the bone graft procedure.
Is a Sinus Lift Safe?
Before receiving a sinus lift, you will have a complete analysis of your jaw and sinus structure with 3D imaging scans and a professional examination.
Your dentist will be able to assess the dimensions of your jawbone and the location and health of the nearby sinus tissue.
The sinus lift is a 15-year-old procedure that is considered completely safe when performed by a trained professional using modern technology and equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Sinus Lifts
1. What is a sinus lift?
This procedure restores lost bone tissue in the upper jaw. It is also known as a sinus graft.
2. Why do I need a sinus lift?
If you have had periodontal disease or tooth extraction, you may have suffered from bone loss. Low bone density makes your jaw weaker and unable to support dental implants.
If you need dental implants to restore missing teeth and improve your dental health, then a sinus lift may be good for you.
3. How does graft work?
When we apply grafting material to the jaw, it will fuse and encourage the growth of a new bone structure.
